Bija Mantras of the Elements

Beej (meaning seed) or Bija mantras are sounds endowed with great spiritual powers. They work in the unseen planes of the universe, in liminal space. They work out miracles in a profound way. Activation of the elements leads to quicker awakening of Kundalini.

It can be a very powerful experience to purify, re-calibrate and activate the 5 great elements in your energy system. The object is to raise kundalini. This is a life changing event, and should not be taken lightly. The energy can hit so powerfully, it can shatter your life as you know it, so an understanding of what you are doing is important and to practice under the guide of a teacher will save you a lot of struggle. It took me 20 years after I had spontaneous kundalini to find someone who could explain what had happened to me  and could guide me through a gentle kundalini awakening.

The Bija mantras do not belong to specific chakras, they are instilled in the elements and those elements are instilled in the chakras.

Muldahara Chakra.
The Bija mantra of the Earth Element is Lam क्षं
Yellow Square indicates the earth element, surrounded by eight shining spears; like lightning facing the eight directions as in the compass.
Inverted red triangle indicates a female gender (Sakthi).
Lingam within the triangle indicates a male gender (Siva). The lingam has three, and a half coiled-serpent lies dormant (the state of ignorance). The serpent's head usually laid downward, which shows kundalini, is asleep.

Two triangles form a star, representing the interpenetration of the masculine and feminine. The 6 points of the star relate to the six other chakras. And on the point of each star are little balls filled with smoke or incense representing wind.
In the center is an eternal flame that stands for the Jivatma (individual soul).
Heart, 12 petals

Hrit chakra,
Below the 12-petal primary lotus, there is a secondary chakra, Hrit chakra, a lotus with eight petals enclosing a Kalpataru, means wish-tree that yields fruits of desire. Yogis see this six-angled shape in their mind's eye as a lake (Manasarovar) with a blue Lotus. This is a Yogic asset; a perfect yogi can realize their wishing. However, misuse of which can be disastrous
